Letter to the Editor of Sonoma Index Tribune regarding Measure C

April 3, 2006

Dear Editor,   I am very disappointed that you took a stand on our Sonoma controversial Meausre C, much less that you are advocating Yes on C.

Re: your position, no one will argue the issue is not complex.  But you are wrong that we who oppose disagree on a solution, or at least we need the opportunity, once Measure C undoubtedly loses, since it is highly unlikely it will gather the required two thirds needed to pass, to come up with "Plan B".

If I could take the liberty of speaking for the opponents, I would venture to say there is a concensus among us that: this is a misuse of eminent domain, the proposed hospital complex is too large and too expensive for our community to support, and we value agricultural land and respect this family's multi generation dairy business.

There is a viable site available for a reasonable price (just over 1/2 of what the city offered for the Leveroni property) on 8th Street, and though the hospital board objects to it as it is just outside the city limits, it is only 2 miles from the proposed Leveroni site and quite accessible.  It is possible to retrofit the existing hospital as another option, though it might involve temporary closure and redirecting patients during the reconstruction to other facilities.  The threat of hospital closure if Measure C passes is an irresponsible tactic on the part of the hospital board and strategists.  As I understand it, the retrofit requirement deadline is not until 2013--and I'm sure a new deal could be struck within months after the election.  There is no reason for doctors to leave their practices or leave town during that time, as threatened.  I understand there are investors in the wings ready to roll up their sleeves and come up with a viable "Plan B," according to a recent ad in the Sonoma Valley Sun.

I challenge you and those who have been scared into supporting Measure C to take another look at the complexities and come together with us to form a plan that everyone can get behind.

Sincerely, Pam Burns-Clair

(Well said, Pam! ....Je concur! PJ)
